High cost treatment pathway

Clinical Process

  • Confirm treatment is not available in New Zealand

  • Identify overseas treatment provider options

  • Notify Service Clinical Director /Director

  • Obtain approval in principle to proceed

  • Follow application process

  • Application form returned to HCTP@health.govt.nz and patient's home DHB

  • Funder :
    Notify funder accessing HCTP
    CC application form
    CC correspondence with Ministry of Health (MoH )

  • Non-Auckland DHB patients – clinician obtains approval from patient’s home DHB cc Funder

  • Provide MoH with additional travel, accommodation, transport costs (accurate as possible)

  • Ensure family aware of MoH funding guidelines and potential financial implications for them

  • Alert finance of HCTP patient (Auckland DHB patients only)

Auckland DHB patients only

  • Request DHB financial support for additional whānau to accompany the patient
    1. Discuss with Child Health Director
    2. Director obtain approval to cover cost from Director Provider Services

Escalation pathway

Escalate to Chief Medical Officer for MoH (Andy Simpson) if concerned that approval delays will adversely affect patient

Funder

  • Ensuring contract signed with MoH and processed

  • Providing advice and assistance as needed

Application form available from: HCTP@health.govt.nz

MoH funding covers:

  • Treatment costs based on treatment providers quote (payable to the provider)

  • Flights, accommodation and internal travel costs for patient and 1 other (parent/caregiver) payable to patient’s home DHB

Family

Advise family of the following:

  • Obtain all in country travel receipts in order for funds to be claimed back from MoH

  • MoH will only pay for 1 member of the whānau to accompany child

  • Check passports current

  • Ensure patient/whānau have required consumables / equipment for trip
