Paracetamol and ibuprofen for PICU patients should be prescribed as per the Starship analgesia guideline.

Loading doses in PICU

Paracetamol

For a child who has received no paracetamol, consider a loading dose as below:
(for post-operative children check anaesthetic charts)

Children <25kg

40mg/kg

Oral / rectal

Children >25kg

30mg/kg (max 2g)

Oral

 

Intravenous paracetamol does not require a loading dose as the blood level is achieved immediately

Ibuprofen

Children >1 month

10mg/kg

Oral
